Thallium

Located at Group 13 and Period 6 of the Periodic Table is one of the element used to kill rats and  mice as they passes their skin easily and reaches inside, killing them. This is Thallium.
Spectrum Lines

First discovered in 1861 using Spectrum Colors by William Crookes. Thallium was isolated the following year independently by two scientists, William Crookes and French chemist Claude Auguste Lamy.

Both scientists, of course, used different ways to isolate Thallium. William Crookes precipitated Zinc and Lead. When the gas from the recovery process is captured, here comes the pure product : Thallium.

However, Claude Auguste Lamy didn't use the same way William did. Instead, he used electrolysis on soluble Thallium Salts. After Electrolysis, pure Thallium was then extracted.
Thallium Salts

Although Claude Auguste Lamy was the first to produce his notes ( March 30 1861 ), it was still considered that both Crookes and Claude isolated Thallium in the same year.

Thallium is one of the deadly poison. It can cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, pain in the arms and legs, coma and convulsions. If Thallium - poisoning got too much in out bodies, Thallium will also result of death.

Shiny Thallium

How Thallium got its name?
Thallium got its name from the Greek word Thallos, meaning green shoot or twig. Its name is based on its newly identified green color spectrum line.

Uses
Thallium can be combined with Sulfur to form Thallium Sulfide. Thallium Sulfide can be made into rodenticides, which is used to kill rats and mice. Because Thallium is colorless and odorless, rats or mice will not notice the existence of  Thallium inside their  'food', they will eat their 'food'. And when the Thallium reaches the inside of the rats or mice's body, they will most likely to die.
